Investing in Tomorrow: The Value of Organizational Endowments

Oct 9, 2024 | News & Events

If you’re looking for a way to help your nonprofit thrive long-term or want to make a lasting impact as a donor, an organizational endowment might be an ideal solution.

At our recent Community Lunch Hour, we learned more about Organizational Endowments from speakers: Marlee Samuels at the Community Foundation, Tasha Beestman from Meals on Wheels, Danielle Belsky from Boys & Girls Club of Portage County, and John Harry from Portage County Historical Society.

What’s an Organizational Endowment?

An organizational endowment fund is a tool for a nonprofit organization to plan for financial security long into the future. Donations are invested, and the interest provides annual support, giving the nonprofit a reliable source of income each year. The Community Foundation of Central Wisconsin manages over 35 of these funds for local organizations.

The Nonprofit Perspective

For nonprofits, having an endowment means peace of mind. Tasha Beestman from Meals on Wheels of Stevens Point said, “Our endowment started with a single estate gift, and it’s more than doubled. It’s comforting to know we’ll have money we can count on every year.”

John Harry from the Portage County Historical Society shared a similar sentiment. “It covers our operational costs—things like insurance—so we can focus more on making an impact. This allows us to direct our fundraising towards issues that really engage people and align with our mission.”

The Donor’s Perspective

For donors, giving to an endowment is a way to create a legacy that lives on. John Harry explains, “It’s an opportunity for donors to stay connected with the organization, even if they’re no longer involved. Their gift keeps giving.”

Tasha adds, “Turning a donation into something that supports the program for life means a lot to our donors. It’s a way for them to leave a lasting impact.”

Why and When to Start?

Starting an endowment early is key. Danielle Belsky from the Boys & Girls Club of Portage County explains,

“It shows your organization’s strength and the community’s belief in your mission. It’s also an investment in the future, so you can grow and meet new challenges down the road.”

Even if your nonprofit is small or just getting started, it’s never too early to plan for the future. As Marlee Samuels, our Director of Donor Services and Programs, puts it, “You can start an endowment anytime. Even if it starts small, it gives you a foundation to build on.”
