Celebrating Literacy and Community: The Story of Reading First

Jan 3, 2025 | News & Events

For more than two decades, Reading First has made a quiet but powerful impact in Portage County by getting books into kids’ hands and encouraging a lifelong love of reading. Marguerite Dietrich, a retired teacher and long-time volunteer, shared how it all began and why it still matters.

How It Started. Launched in 2002, Reading First set out with a simple goal: make books accessible to children across Central Wisconsin. A team of local educators, librarians, and business leaders came together to make this vision a reality, prioritizing inclusive, high-quality, and age-appropriate books.

A Book for Every Child. Through events like June Dairy Days and Art in the Park, the program distributed thousands of books, giving kids the joy of choosing stories that excited them. Volunteers worked hard to offer options tailored to children’s interests, from adventure stories to fantasy series.

The Impact Numbers. In its 22 years of operation, Reading First distributed over 50,000 brand-new books. These books became tools of empowerment and imagination, often sparking a child’s deep connection with literature. The program also engaged parents, grandparents, and community members, turning reading into a shared experience and reinforcing its importance at home.

Why It Matters. For families facing financial constraints, new books are a luxury. Reading First ensured every child had equal access to books, regardless of their financial situation or background, so no one felt excluded or singled out. As Marguerite put it, “Every child deserves the dignity of a brand-new book.”

A Lasting Legacy. Although Reading First’s direct operations concluded recently, its impact remains visible in the community. Teachers, parents, and even young adults who grew up with the program still share stories of how it influenced their lives. The values it showed—compassion, connection, and commitment—continue to inspire new efforts to promote literacy and community engagement.

How You Can Help. The spirit of Reading First lives on through other initiatives supported by the Community Foundation of Central Wisconsin. You can contribute to funds like the Education Mission Fund of Portage County or Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library Fund serving Waushara County, ensuring that programs that celebrate free or reduced-price literacy and learning remain strong. Every donation helps create a future where every child in Central Wisconsin has the tools to succeed.
