The Community Foundation of Central Wisconsin (CFCWI) has awarded a $50,000 Major Project grant to Door2Dreams to support the construction of the Berard Gathering Lodge, a vital community space designed to foster independence, social connection, and inclusion for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD).
The Major Project grant is awarded annually to one substantial initiative in Portage and Waushara Counties. This year’s grant recognizes Door2Dreams’ innovative approach to addressing housing, social isolation, and community engagement for IDD adults. The Community Foundation received 14 applications for the 2026 Major Project cycle, selecting Door2Dreams for its significant impact potential and alignment with community values.
“We are incredibly grateful to the Community Foundation of Central Wisconsin for believing in the vision of Door2Dreams and the impact the Berard Gathering Lodge will have in our community,” said Karen Medo, Door2Dreams Board President. “The Community Foundation has been a partner of ours since we started so this grant represents so much more than helping us build a building. It’s a continued investment in creating a place where adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities can build friendships, find belonging, and be part of a community designed with them in mind.”
Social isolation poses significant health risks to people with disabilities. The Gathering Lodge addresses this challenge by creating a centrally located gathering space—accessible by public transit—where residents and community members can build friendships, engage in activities, and support one another. The facility is projected to serve 500 to 1,000 individuals annually.
Door2Dreams’ mission aligns with the Community Foundation’s commitment to the Helping People mission area. The organization’s vision that every adult with an IDD can “own their front door” to vibrant, inclusive community life, reflects values of dignity, independence, and belonging that resonate throughout our region.
“This project embodies what Major Project grants are designed to support: bold, community-focused solutions that create lasting impact,” said Sarah Ross, Director of Community Leadership with the Community Foundation. The Gathering Lodge is part of a multi-phased Door2Dreams Village project. The Community Foundation’s $50,000 grant will help launch construction of the first phase and move the vision forward.
