Did you know that the Community Foundation of Central Wisconsin is one of the few local organizations where your donation can support and encourage local arts and cultural programming in our community? A gift to the Foundation’s Arts & Culture Mission Fund can do just that. How did the Arts & Culture Mission Fund start?
In spring 2004, the Arts Alliance of Portage County, which is now known as CREATE Portage County, was formed. At that time, the 13 member board had a goal to connect, promote, and illuminate artistic expression, artists, and audiences across Portage County.
The Arts & Culture Mission Fund was originally established shortly thereafter in September of 2004. The funds co-founders were Bill Schierl, Ann & Bob Shannon, and the Arts Alliance of Portage County, Inc (now known as CREATE Portage County). The fund was started from a state grant and a generous contribution from the Robert and Ann Shannon Family Fund.
The purpose of the fund, which still exists today, was to develop, promote, and enhance arts and culture in Portage County, and specifically support the operation of CREATE Portage County (formerly the Arts Alliance of Portage County). This fund continues to provide grants to support arts and cultural programming in Portage County.
Interestingly, one of the first events for the Arts Alliance of Portage County was their Arts Week: Portage County event. This event included the ‘Arts Walk’ event which is still taking place today and actually kicking off this Friday. CREATE is hosting their Arts Walk & Night Market downtown Stevens Point on THREE different dates. The first is this Friday, May 13 from 5-8 pm. There will be over 40 vendors set up in the downtown area with some kid friendly activities as well. The Central Wisconsin Symphony Orchestra will also be performing. Be sure to check out their Facebook page.
There are a variety of ways you can support arts and cultural programming in our community. One way is through a gift to the Arts & Culture Mission Fund which ensures the support of these programs for future generations.
